Wantage and Grove are based south west of Abingdon. Wantage is an historic market town in the Vale of White Horse, thought to be the birth place of King Alfred, with an attractive market place surrounded by rural downlands. Grove is an expanding village which sits about 1.5 miles to the north.
In order to increase commercial investment in the town the Wantage Prospectus was recently launched to promote the town. Further information on Wantage and Grove’s key businesses can be found in this publication.
Since 2013, Wantage has employed its own market town co-ordinators, who are responsible for delivering a range of projects with town centre businesses, Wantage and District Chamber of Commerce, Wantage Town Council and the Vale Council. The town team manage the Love Wantage website established in 2017 to promote local events, businesses and attractions. If you want to keep up to date with the latest news and events from the Love Wantage team, please visit their regularly updated blog.
In 2014 Wantage received a national seal of approval, winning the Town Centre Category in the Great British High Street (GBHS) awards, which recognises innovative town centres. The GBHS Awards are run by the Department for Community and Local Government’s Future High Streets Forum, which brings together leaders across retail, property and business to better understand the competition town centres across the country face and to drive forward new ideas and policies.
The Vale Council have also introduced a free town centre public WiFi service that covers the Market Place and along Mill Street.
